This is it folks! No Main Event report because there wasn’t one. The main event was canceled due to immigration problems with one of the participants and another bout was cancelled when somebody didn’t make weight. So we were left with three undercard matches and one exhibition bout. To his credit, Promoter James Pollins started the night with an apology to the sparse crowd and offered refunds to any who wanted one. But at least we didn’t have to hang around long as we were treated to three early KO’s.

October Smash at the Tuscany

By Steven Robinson

Julio Luna defeats Aaron Boyd by UD
Toshi Kuwata whips Dylan Baffuto by TKO
Gustavo Enriquez destroys Maalikk Brown by TKO
Adan Hernandez beats Marco Perez by TKO
Alejandro Ramirez beats Adriano DosSantos UD

On paper it appeared that Promoter Richard Steele had put together an evening of pretty even opponents for his debut performance of Thursday Night Fights at the Tuscany Hotel and Casino. It just didn't work out that way. The evening started at 8:00 pm and we went home before 10:00 pm with 3 early KO's and two lopsided decisions.

In the opener local favorite Julio Luna remains undefeated at 2-0 with a 4 round unanimous decision over Aaron Boyd of Los Angeles in a Super Lightweight match. Judges Jerry Roth and Dalby Shirley had it 39-37 while Judge Paul Smith saw it 40-36 as did lv boxing all for Luna.

Next up was winless Las Vegan Dylan Baffuto (0-4) in a Light Heavyweight bout against Toshi Kuwata (1-0) of Oxnard, CA. Referee Kenny Bayless stopped the match at 51 seconds into round one after Baffuto was hit with several hard rights to the head and was wobbled without fighting back or defending himself. Kuwata goes to 2-0 while Baffuto should stick to his day job.

In the Semi-Main Event Cruiserweight Gustavo Enriquez (10-4, 7 KO's) took on Las Vegas resident Maalikk Brown (18-3-2, 14 KO's). Enriquez got Brown in the corner and battered him about the head without Brown throwing a punch or covering up forcing Referee Joe Cortez to stop the bout at 37 seconds into round one. After the fight Brown stated that he was waiting for a standing eight count. A good lesson learned in that there is no standing eight count allowed under the unified rules of boxing. Enriquez gets an easy win by TKO.

In the Main Event Adan Hernandez 12-1, 4 KO's, of El Paso, TX took on Marco Perez 17-4, 13 KO's of Culican, MX in a Super Featherweight match. Hernandez is the reigning Texas Super Featherweight Champion. Round one was pretty even until late in the round when Hernandez put Perez on the floor at the bell. In round 2 Referee Kenny Bayless warns Perez about low blows, as Hernandez appears to control the round. Round three got real ugly when Referee Bayless took two points from Perez for repeated low blows and finally disqualified Perez when he landed south of the border again. Hernandez wins by TKO due to disqualification. Perez wins the Andrew Golata trophy.

The final match of the night was another Super Featherweight bout between Adriano Dos Santos 6-11, 3 KO's of Las Vegas and Alejandro Ramirez 4-5, 3 KO's of Tijuana, MX. Two fighters with suspect records put on the best match of the evening. In round one Dos Santos appeared to be winning the round until Ramirez landed a left that put him on his back just before the bell. Round two was a carbon copy with the same result as Ramirez landed another left to put Dos Santos down again. I gave Ramirez round three just for staying on his feet the whole round. Ramirez went on to dominate the remaining three rounds while the spunky Dos Santos hung in there and held his own. Referee Carol Castellano saw it 59-53, Adalaide Byrd saw 60-52 and Dave Moretti had it 59-54 all for Alejandro Ramirez who evens his record at 5-5.

Steele says, ”This is good for the fighters and good for the fans.”

Tuscany Hotel and Casino General Manager Tom Guth said he is looking forward to the first event and he hopes it is the first of many to happen in the future.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
FRIDAY NITE FIGHTS AT THE ORLEANS
OCTOBER 17, 2003
GUITLY BOXING, TOMMY GALLAGHER PRODUCTION, and CES BOXING in association with THE ORLEANS HOTEL & CASINO and EVERLAST USA presents: FRIDAY NITE FIGHTS. This month feature bout will be for the NABF Title when Lightweight Champion Michael Clark (31-2-0-18 KO’s) Columbus, OH puts his title on the line vs. Antonio “Canseca” Ramirez (20-6-6-18 KO’s) Constanza, DR. Clark won the title with a 12 round win over Steve Quinonez this past May. Clark’s great record has only two losses and they came against the divisions best in WBO Champ Artur Grigorjan and WBA Champ Vivian Harris. Ramirez, ranked number 6th by the NABF is coming here after a big win in his last outing but prior to that and on a week’s notice took on the very same Quinonez only to lose a hard fought battle. In his last Orleans appearance Ramirez stopped highly rated Ernesto Zepeda. This is Ramirez’s second try for the title and he wants it bad. Clark and Ramirez may have one opponent in common but that’s were the comparison ends and where the fight will begin.

The undercard features the return of Juan Ruiz (15-1-0-5 KO’s) Santa Clarita, CA vs. Phillip Payne (13-8-1-5 KO’s) St. Louis, MO 10 rounds Jr. Featherweights.
